Why use technology in the K-12 classroom?

I think the main reason is because of the variety and the options involved with it. You gain so much from using technology in the classroom. It helps to shine a whole new light on things. It helps children see things differently and understand them better. I think it is also important to have technology in the classroom because of the world we live in today. You can do just about almost anything online that you can do in the real world. Our students need to be as familiar as they can with technology, because we can only imagine what it will give us next.

Does using technology necessarily make us learn easier/more/better?

I think it does, yes. Technology and especially the Internet make everything much more accessible. Students today have so much information at the click of a mouse. If students are having trouble learning something, or a certain strategy, the Internet has websites that explain things differently, or show the concept broken down much more to where it may be much easier for the student to grasp the main idea. The information is almost unlimited because of the technology that is the Internet.

Why use technology in the K-12 classroom?
Technology can be a very powerful teaching tool when used correctly. Teachers can design whole group and individual lessons using technology to reach a wide variety of learning styles. Students of today will grow up using technology everyday of their lives. Our job is to teach them how to learn and practice critical thinking and problem solving. The technology our students will be using in the future has not yet been invented. They need to be flexible in their thinking about technology so they can adapt to the new technologies of the future.

The need and popularity for use of technolgy in the classroom is becoming as mainstream, if not more so, than the traditional paper and pencil way of working. Even more evident is the fact that computers occupy classrooms from the time five year olds first attend class until the point they graduate from high school.
The underlying reason for the ever increasing use of technology in all levels of schooling is a fundamental one. The world in which we live, work and play is driven by technology. We would be failing our k-12 generation as teachers, administrators and curriculum designers if technology was not a huge part of the teaching and learning process. We, as educators, are merely helping to prepare our students for the worldly opportunities that confront them by placing a priority on technology in the k-12 classoroom.

Why use technology in the classroom?
It is so valuable in many ways--first of all, this is the way of the contemporary world--we talk about "real-world" applications...so we need to be in the "real world" and that is technology driven. Our students are often very savvy with technology--it can serve to engage and enhance learning on many levels. Inviting a student to use the computer to design a project can lead to deeper levels of learning and understandings because of the access to the world on their fingertips.

How do teachers receive feedback from students?

As teachers, we must also be proficient observers. We can recieve immediate feedback from student verbal and nonverbal responses. We can guage investment through participation levels and products. We can also gain feedback through such methods as exit slips. Ultimately, we can question our students directly....

When teachers assign a cumulative grade, are they providing an accurate representation of student understanding?

I have not had the experience of applying this as yet, but in my opinion, there are many problems with grading period. Grades can be very subjective, tessts, quizzes may be biased, students have different methods of demonstrating thorough knowledge of content and testing may not fully reflect the depth of their knowledge. I think we also need to look closely at how the student paticipates in the class, how they are able to apply what they learn as well.
